Back in 2019, Liverpool won the Club World Cup in Qatar following a 1-0 win over Flamengo, thanks to Roberto Firmino’s goal in extra-time.
Usually, the winners of the competition are granted the honour of wearing a Club World Cup winners badge on the front of their shirt, as seen in the photo above.
However, Liverpool were only allowed to wear it in the Champions League, as the Premier League banned the Reds from displaying it domestically.
The Premier League let Jürgen Klopp’s side wear the badge just once in league action, in a 1-0 win over Wolves just days after beating Flamengo.
Now, the Premier League have done something which will infuriate Liverpool and their supporters.
Well, according to the Daily Mail, Chelsea have been given permission by the Premier League to wear the Club World Cup badge on a weekly basis.
The Blues are allowed to show off their Club World Cup win all the way up to December, when this year’s edition of the competition takes place.
Chelsea could also be granted permission to wear it in the FA Cup, although they will have to submit a request to the Football Association.
Nevertheless, this is sure to annoy Liverpool fans.
In our view, the Reds should be livid about this.
The Club World Cup is a prestigious competition, and it isn’t easy to win seeing as you first have to win the Champions League to qualify for it.
Instead of forcing Liverpool to hide the badge, the Premier League should’ve embraced the fact that they housed the world champions in their division.
It is also a shame for Liverpool, who worked hard to secure the silverware and earned the right to show off their achievement.
Hopefully, the Reds will lift another Club World Cup in 2022, and be able to take advantage of the Premier League’s sudden rule change.
