Paul Scholes has claimed that Paul Pogba would get into Liverpool or Manchester City’s XI ‘in his best form’, as he told Premier League Productions (20/02/22 at 1:40 pm).
The former treble-winner was asked which Manchester United player gets into either Liverpool or Man City’s side and he put Pogba’s name forward, despite previously being a ‘big critic’ of the ice-cool midfielder.
The 28-year-old is a bit of a marmite-like figure when it comes to judging his talents and what he produces on the big stage.
For some, there is a big reason why he has a World Cup winners medal in his cabinet, whilst others question when he will showcase why Man United paid a then club-record £89 million (BBC Sport) for his talents in 2016.
But when Scholes was asked which Man United player gets into Liverpool or Man City’s XI, he issued this response.
“Pogba in his best form would,” said Scholes. He is indicative of what the club are doing. Every player is inconsistent. People running the club are inconsistent in what they are doing.
“I have been a big critic of Paul, but if you are an opposing player going to Old Trafford and you are playing against Fred and McTominay ‘all day long’.
“Now, you don’t know what you are going to get with Paul. But when he is on his game, he is brilliant.
“But when he isn’t, then against your Liverpool and Man City’s, you might struggle in them areas. Where do Man United go next year to replace him?”
Many would question whether a player of Pogba’s ilk and what he does, or even doesn’t, do off the ball would be welcomed into a Jurgen Klopp XI.
On the ball, there is no doubt that he can produce magical moments and bamboozle his opponents time and time again.
But, from when he re-joined Man United up until now, he hasn’t taken his game to the levels many expected.
The France international is out of contract in the summer, and if he does leave, then he would head for the Old Trafford exit door with more questions over his head than answers.
