The Mail claim Newcastle have now asked Liverpool about a move to sign defender Nat Phillips. It is believed the Toon would have to pay a fee between £10million and £15million to sign the centre-back this week.
Phillips, 24, has only played three times for Liverpool this season. The return of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez from injury, the form of Joel Matip and the signing of Ibrahima Konate has made Phillips fifth-choice.
The Bolton-born defender spoke in December of his desire to leave Liverpool, and now, a move to Newcastle could give him that opportunity. Newcastle are desperate to improve their defensive line.
Diego Carlos remains a priority for Newcastle, though the two clubs are struggling to agree a fee. Other options include Benoit Badiashile and James Tarkowski – but Phillips has now emerged as a possible signing.
Newcastle need Premier League experience, and players willing to put their body on the line to survive the threat of relegation. Phillips gives Newcastle both of those traits, with Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood also signed.
The no-nonsense defender is superb in the air, but has also developed his technical abilities at Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp. A fee between £10million and £15million, given his age, would be superb business.
It seems that a move would suit all parties. Phillips wants a move, Liverpool want to cash in and Newcastle need a centre-back like him. The defender would surely jump at the chance to move to Tyneside.
